Mashable's post is a great example of linkbait: excellent content, strong headline, and social-media friendly. Technorati currently reports 231 inbound links to their post from the blogosphere, and this post makes it 232. "Inbound links -- who cares?" Google cares. And so Mashable cares. As Google uses inbound links as one important factor in determining the relevance and authority of a website, these hundreds of inbound links will help Mashable score higher in all of their organic Google results. Are you writing content for your web site that is so good that outsiders are compelled to link to it? Are you even tracking your inbound links? Linkbaiting is an ugly sounding word, but it is a totally legitimate and powerful marketing technique to increase organic traffic from all the engines.
