Me in Merkle is a series of interviews that showcase the incredible individuals who make Merkle a unique and diverse place to work. This week we chatted to Isabel Hiller, senior associate - technology consultant, at Merkle based in the London office.
1. Tell us about yourself. Where did you grow up and where do you live now?
I've always lived in London, I love how much there is to do and there still so many places I haven't been yet.
2. What drew you to your current career?
I've always been drawn to the story telling aspect of marketing, the individual steps each customer takes on their journey with a brand, it's still one of the parts of my role I enjoy the most.
3. Why Merkle?
Lots of socials, relaxed office-wear, free food, and the nicest bunch of people you'll ever meet who are brilliant at what they do.
4. What do you enjoy most about marketing technology (martech) and what do you think future developments will be?
Coming from an advertising technology (adtech) background I enjoy understanding how advertising and marketing technology can work together to create connected customer experiences. I think the merging of traditionally separate advertising and marketing channels to build holistic customer views, and advanced next best conversation decisioning will be the future of marketing. As an industry there is a definite move toward building customer-centric experiences with brands which I think has come to be expected from customers in a way it wasn't before.
5. What would your advice be to somebody considering a career in martech?
Do it. There's so many opportunities to learn and challenge yourself.
6. What is your greatest accomplishment?
Something I'm most proud of is how much I've learnt and continue to learn, I really do come across something new every day.
7. Tell us a bit about your experience so far with Merkle.
I started working with Merkle around three and a bit years ago and came from a job totally unrelated to marketing, it was a steep learning curve, and I was amazed to find out just how much goes into showing an ad to someone online. It could have been very daunting, but I found myself surrounded by people who are very good at what they do and always happy to sit down with a biscuit and a coffee and have a chat. Over the last few years, I've learnt so much about the ad/martech ecosystem (and still am learning) and have been lucky enough to join a great team where I can use that knowledge creatively for each client we engage with.
8. What inspires you about Merkle’s workplace culture?
It's a really supportive place to work, there is a lot of trust, flexibility and friendship.
9. What was your dream job growing up?
A vet but I'm really squeamish about veins, arteries and anything along those lines, so would have been totally useless at it.

a. How do you like your eggs?
Well done, undercooked egg white is enough to put me off eggs for a lifetime
b. What are you currently watching on Netflix/Prime?
Downton Abbey. I'm late to it but impressed with the drama. "This might be better than Game of Thrones" - Housemate after binge watching three, three hour long episodes
c. What’s your guilty pleasure?
Eating something sweet after every meal and cheesy 90s films
d. What is your dream holiday destination?
Sorrento in Italy is beautiful but I would love to visit some of the national parks in America
e. Best advice or mantra you live by?
'Just do it' is probably the only mantra I use (or remember), good for getting out of bed on a cold morning and re-painting my living room
