Me in Merkle is a series of interviews that showcase the incredible individuals who make Merkle a unique and diverse place to work. This week we chatted to Rowdy Fabon, account director at Merkle B2B.
1. Tell us about yourself. Where did you grow up and where do you live now?
I was born and raised in Manila, Philippines and moved to the UK back in 2005. I also lived and worked in Amsterdam for 3.5 years before going back to London just in time for the first lockdown. I am currently living in Notting Hill, super touristy and busy regardless of what day it is but I just love the neighbourhood so much and how hassle-free it is to get to and from the office.
2. What drew you to your current career?
I’ve always loved Marketing and Advertising – it’s a very interesting industry where the learning never stops. Working in a media agency in particular allows me to express myself, be part of big conversations and help in bringing those amazing ideas to life. It’s a super fast-paced working environment and can teach you some valuable lessons around time management and managing expectations.
3. Why Merkle?
Merkle are the experts in data, technology and the B2B environment. I want to learn more and challenge myself in these areas and I certainly want to learn with the best.
4. What part of your new position are you most excited about?
The opportunity to work with different people, from the clients to the media partners, from the internal teams to fellow agencies – it’s a role that will allow me to put everything I’ve learned in media into practice but also empower me with new learning through dealing with these different stakeholders.
5. What excites you about B2B?
It is a familiar but also an unfamiliar territory for me. There is so much to learn with B2B. I know for sure that working in B2B environments can be a rewarding career for those who enjoy working with people, building and cultivating relationships and of course mastering the art of marketing a product/service to another business. When we talk about full funnel advertising and really getting into every phase, every channel and every type of targeting – B2B is a great place to be.
6. B2B may not be the home of the ‘sexy’ brands, but what would you tell somebody considering pivoting from B2C?
In the world of media, it’s not always about the brands that you have worked with but the kind of projects, challenges and strategies that you have dealt with for those brands, and based on my experience of working on both sides, B2B will offer you what goes beyond your standard Facebook campaign or your typical Programmatic display activation – there’s definitely more thinking involved when it comes to B2B strategy and a more meticulous approach to audience targeting for example.
7. What is your greatest accomplishment?
Living and working abroad, away from my family and friends, and yet staying positive, super driven at work (and in life) and generally keeping myself sane and healthy, was a huge accomplishment for me.
8. Tell us a bit about your experience so far with Merkle.
Exciting, interesting, challenging, busy but fun – I came in at the right moment and I am enjoying the opportunity to learn more about the business and the clients but also put forward some of the knowledge and expertise I’ve acquired through my years of working in media.
9. What inspires you about Merkle’s workplace culture?
Everyone knows what they are doing – when I say I want to learn with the best, I am definitely surrounded by some of the smartest, most talented media professionals I’ve ever met in my career.
10. What was your dream job growing up?
I’ve always wanted to be a film director – the first Filipino filmmaker to win an Oscar – that’s how specific I was with my childhood ambition. And no Filipino director has won yet, so I still have time!
11. Why would somebody want to work in your team?
Because we are a TEAM. It is so easy to say that we are ‘one team’ but the real challenge is how to actually put that into practice. I am a big believer in equal opportunities, which also means equal voice within a team setting. Everyone gets to say something, and your opinion matters - whether that is client-related, an improvement within the ways of working or which pub are we going to for our Friday drinks. I value team spirit a lot!
12. Rapid fire:
a. How do you like your eggs?
Sunny side up – YUM!
b. What are you currently watching on Netflix/Prime?
I’m more of a movie geek as opposed to a series fan. I saw The French Exit recently in Prime starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Lucas Hedges – phenomenal. Brilliantly acted piece, dark, riveting, funny and relevant.
c. What’s your guilty pleasure?
Anything about Lady Gaga and maybe sleeping – thinking about it, I’m actually not too shy about these things.
d. What is your dream holiday destination?
100% Alaska – been saving for it and almost went in 2020 but you already know why it didn’t happen.
e. Best advice or mantra you live by?
Have to refer to one of my favourite words of wisdom from the great Matthew McConaughey - Prioritise who you are, who you want to be, and don’t spend time with anything that antagonises your character.
