Me in Merkle - Abbie Green

Me In Merkle is a series of interviews that showcase the incredible individuals who make Merkle a unique and diverse place to work. This week we chatted to Abbie Green, senior associate, paid social at Merkle.

1. Tell us about yourself. Where did you grow up and where do you live now?

I’ve grown up in East London, and over the last few years have moved more central. I love the hustle and bustle of city life and now life in Camden where there is always something going on!

2. What drew you to your current career?

Studying marketing at university gave me an insight into digital which I instantly loved and being a social media addict and a bit of a data nerd myself means paid social is a great match for me.

3. Why Merkle?

Merkle was one of very few places I applied for when looking for a new role, I had looked at countless roles and companies, but none of the others I looked at had fit with my values, which was really important to me. Merkle culture is like no other, the team relationships and training offered can’t be beaten!

4. Tell us a bit more about your day-to-day.

Day-to-day is usually a mix of things for me, between internal and external meetings, coming up with briefs and new ideas as well as getting into the data of campaigns to prep for presentations or reporting.

5. What do you enjoy most about Paid Social? And what do you think future developments will be?

The biggest thing for me that drew me to work in paid social is that is it always changing so quickly. This means we are always learning and developing as a department, and there are always exciting new opportunities for us and our clients!

6. What would your advice be to somebody considering a career in Paid Social?

Definitely research the role and talk to people who work in paid media, I think there’s an assumption that if you love Instagram you’ll love paid social so it important to know a lot of what we do is actually quite technical and data heavy. Which is great if you’re like me and love a bit of excel analysis! I’ve also always said the most important thing when working in paid social is to be curious. Be curious about data and new platforms, you’ll be constantly learning so have an open mind and enjoy it!

7. What is your greatest accomplishment?

Taking a step back in my career path to start at Merkle, I was previously in a different industry which meant instead of moving up or sideways to get here I had to start again at the bottom, it was a big scary move for me but the best thing I ever did, and I’d do it again in a heartbeat!

8. Tell us a bit about your experience so far with Merkle.

It’s definitely been a journey, I started just before lockdown so a lot of my career has been virtual until recently. The team have been amazing, having such a tightknit work family has been amazing for my personal development, but I’ve also learnt so many new skills from technical aspects to presentation skills.

9. What inspires you about Merkle’s workplace culture?

The fact that you don’t feel the hierarchy, everyone from top to bottom is friendly and approachable. No question is too big or too small and everyone is super open minded and friendly!

10. What was your dream job growing up?

I always wanted to be a vet, until I realised you had to study for so many years that changed my mind pretty quickly!

11. Are you involved in any of our DEI Pillars? If so, which one and can you tell us a bit about it?

I’m not part of any of the pillars myself, but the DEI events are one of my favourite parts of the job, especially women in leadership and the LGBTQ+ ones!

12. How do you like your eggs?

Poached, always

13. What are you currently watching on Netflix/Prime?

Bridgerton, I don’t want it to end!

14. What’s your guilty pleasure?

Pickles…straight out the jar

15. What is your dream holiday destination?

Currently Barbados

16. Best advice or mantra you live by?

If it won’t matter in 5 years, don’t spend more than 5 minutes worrying about it!
