Big Data Engineer - Contract

Location: Edinburgh, Scotland.

We are looking for candidates who are based either in or around Edinburgh aswell as candidates who are based in or around the Midlands (including Derby, Nottingham, Leicester, Stoke, Loughborough and Birmingham) and London. 

Job Description:

Project Delivery:

  • Responsible for development of the Big Data components within the Marketing Data Platform
  • Supports design of Elsevier’s overall MDP
  • Seen as a "trusted advisor" from a Big Data perspective between Merkle and Elsevier, adding value. When required acting as a Technical Lead
  • Create production-ready code, using development practices and an agile iterative approach
  • Support prepare materials in support of the (Stage Gate) review process, includes technical specifications
  • Play a pivotal role with Project Managers in ensure work is assigned to the most suitable individual with the relevant skill in the technical team
  • Work with the Technical Lead for delivery of MDP
  • Maintain familiarity with Merkle and Elsevier’s architectural standards, technical landscape, validation requirements, central service request processes
Qualifications:

Technical Skills/ Experience:

  • 5 Years coding experience with a High-Level programming language (preferable Java or Scala)
  • Exposure to Big Data technologies (Spark, Hive, Oozie, Sqoop, NiFi, HDFS, R)
  • Have a strong interest in learning how to use technology to solve problems and enjoy the idea of designing and implementing these solutions for our clients

Desirable Skills include:

  • Exposure to Windows or Linux\Unix
  • Exposure the Play Framework, Docker, Elastic Beanstalk
  • Exposure databases technologies (MySQL, PostgresSQL, Oracle, SQL Server, MongoDB)
  • Exposure to cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, Google)
  • 10+ years of development and engineering experience including Big data and cloud technologies including AWS, Apache Spark
  • Being highly motivated the Technical Lead will see projects through to fruition and ensure they are delivered to the highest quality and technical standards
  • May conduct software and infrastructure reviews to ensure technical components are fit for purpose
  • Experience of creating technical specifications including the solution’s key document System Specification
  •  Experience of architecting and applying design patterns and best practices to data centric solutions, especially big data and cloud solutions

Communication:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work to tight deadlines keeping within a structured framework adhering to stringent business processes
  • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate with other technical specialists
  • Ability to clearly articulate complex information verbally and in writing
  • A passion for technology and innovative ideas

General:

  • Analytical thinking, with the capability to apply logic to solve problems
  • Ability to work under pressure, multi-task, and meet deadlines
  • Determination to solve complex and challenging situations
  • Initiative to pro-actively expand knowledge and improve skills
