Job Description:

We’re looking for a Data Engineer to work on our Discovery product’s underlying infrastructure, security, automation and data architectures to refine existing capabilities and create new functionality.

As a Data Engineer you will:

  • Write well-structured, beautiful, clean code
  • Design and build analytical systems and applications
  • Design smart ways of storing and displaying complex data
  • Build configurable statistical models in Scala to run on an Apache Spark processing engine
  • Support our automated testing team test the quality of your contributions
  • Care about your craft, be aware of new technologies and be keen to review and explore them when appropriate
  • Feed your opinions, backed by data and investigation, to the wider team
  • Create documentation and tutorials to be used by team members and externally
  • Have a deep understanding of modern platform architecture
  • Be an active contributing part of an agile team
  • Define your career path and be given the opportunity to grow and learn

You need to be skilled at:

  • Distributed computing, networking, security and infrastructure; its advantages and disadvantages in modelling and analytical applications
  • Writing great code
  • Cloud computing (AWS, Azure or GCP – ideally AWS) and its security, automation and manageability
  • Excellent knowledge of Unix scripting and one of R, Python, Java or Scala
  • Application architecture; version control
  • Relational and non-relational databases and when to use them
  • Container Orchestration Systems such as Kubernetes

Technologies we’re using that you will be expected to use too:

  •   Ubuntu server, shell scripting
  •   Kubernetes and Docker
  •   PostgreSQL
  •   Apache Spark (Scala, SQL)
  •   Scala and occasionally R or Python
  •   SBT + Maven
  •   AWS services including EC2, S3, IAM, ECR and CloudFormation
  •   Scala, Spark MLLib, Java, R, Python
  •   Bitbucket and Docker Hub
