This law, banning local authorities and schools from “promoting homosexuality”, led to a lack of education on queer issues and made many queer people feel like second-class citizens. Sir​ Ian McKellen was so incensed by this law that he not only came out publicly but also helped found a charity called Stonewall who to this day campaign for the equality of lesbian, gay, bi and trans people across Britain!
